80+ point swing from last season

Bee's u14's took a squad of 19 to Saffron Walden for a 'league' game on Sunday.

Nerves were obvious, this is a side that put 50+ on us last season, but Dave, Mario and Joe have got this squad to new levels this season.
The boys stuck to the game plan given, worked their socks off on a very big pitch and outplayed their opponents for large swathes of the game. Unfortunately the society referee appointed to the game failed to show so one of the Walden coaches stepped in, We thank him for that, but the boys took time to adjust to his interpretations.

From the off the Bees got stuck in and took the game to the home team. Dominating the contact area for the early part giving clear ball for the backs to enjoy. From this early pressure Juan scored the first try from close range while on the pitch as a blood replacement for Callum who took a knee to the nose on his first game back while bravely securing loose ball on the ground.

This woke the home team up and they started to use the width of the pitch to try and get outside the backs but some determined tackling kept them at bay for a period.
Walden did level the scores after several good phases of play and a couple of favourable decisions. Most people saw the forward pass in the build up and the knock on at the breakdown the following phase but play was allowed to go on while the Bees paused, waiting for a whistle, Walden capitalising to score in the corner.

While waiting for the conversion the boys were told to play till they heard a whistle despite what they saw and to up their work rate.

Lewis soon restored the Bees advantage with a well taken try, stepping several players on his way to the line. Wicksy converted. 5-12 to the Bees.

The two sides cancelled each other out for the remainder of the half.

The coaches called for a little more at half time and got it in spades in the second half.

From a scrum 30m out and in the middle of the park No8 Ruben picked and went of on a large arcing run around the back line to score in the corner with two opponents hanging off him. Conversion missed. 5-17.

The resulting kick off failed to go 10 and the Bees had a penalty. Ruben took the tap from Lewis and this time took the shortest route through the Walden defensive line to score his second in two minutes. Conversion missed 5-22.

The Walden team responded with a large period with the ball in the Bees half. Their large No3 making big metres every time he got the ball. They came close on a couple of occasions but handling errors from the outside backs or determined defence kept them at bay. The Bees did fail a few times to exit their try line area opting to run out of defence , rushing their play when gaining possession, instead of kicking clear.
From one such period of pressure, five minutes from the end of the game, another error from Walden and Charlie picked the ball up three meters from his own try line, again trying to run out of defence instead of kicking clear but this time he found a hole and was off!
Three Walden players chased hard all the way to their try line where Charlie dotted down. The conversion was kicked by Sam Fisher.

Last play was called by the referee and from the kick off Billericay managed to get the ball off the field for a huge win.

Dave, Mario, Joe, Lee and Rew all said it was the best performance they'd seen from the boys. Their hard work, determination, support play and communication paying dividends.

The boys have training this Sunday at 10am followed by Easter Sunday.
The week after (03/04) we have Brentwood at Willowbrook. Kick off will be 11:00 as the minis are at the Romford Festival.
If you're able and want to see a great game of rugby then come along.
