Billericay v Romford

Andy Collings3 Nov 2014 - 11:06

30 SECONDS FROM VICTORY

Billericay Bees almost came away with victory against a very large Romford team yesterday (02/11) in very, very wet conditions.
Playing down the slope in the first half the Bee's team did their usual thing of giving the opposition a head start.
The Romford teams not so secret weapon, the winger who was head and shoulders taller than anyone else!, scoring two tries in quick succession, both under the posts, both converted. 0-14

Billericay then upped their game and started to apply pressure to their opponents who started to make mistakes with the wet and slippy ball. This pressure was rewarded when Sam Philips scored his first of the day from a kick ahead from fly half Sam Wicks,
Wicks also converting the score. 7-14

Romford were winning every scrum with their sizable pack but the Billericay terriers were winning the rucks and started to believe in themselves. Ruben Collings putting one tackle in that was to win him 'tackle of the day' again.

The second half started twice. The Romford kicker completely missing the ball at the first restart attempt as the ball didn't bounce up in the wet on his drop kick.

Billericay started to return the ball with intent having been told to protect the ball and keep the passes close due to the conditions.
Playing up the slope there were a series of tap penalties with everyone seeming to want to take the ball and run hard at their opponents. Oliver Hitchcock, Sam Fisher, Tom Spooner and Sam Philips all had a good go and it was from one of these tap penalties that Philips saw there was no cover on the left and ran 30 yards to score in the corner. Wicks missed this conversion 12-14

From the resulting kick off Sam Philips picked the ball up inside his own 22. He then went off on an amazing 80m run beating most of the Romford team to score his hat trick try under the posts. Wicks converting for a lead. 19-14

Romford came back and came back hard camping in Billericay's 22 for a long period but the Bee's spirit and determination kept Romford at bay for a while. A series of scrums and penalties were won by Romford as Billericay struggled to get their hands on the ball in the final period.
From one of the penalties 5m out the big Romford prop scored near the 15m line taking three would be tacklers with him. 19-19 with the conversion to come. Billericay were understandably upset but with one last show of determination they all charged the conversion down and the kick went wide.

A great game of rugby from every player from both teams in condition that could be described as ideal for rugby or awful but others.

This Sunday the u13's are due to be playing Brightlinsea but they have withdrawn from the league so every team will be at home for Remembrance Sunday.
