Billericay take on Brentwood and Basildon at Willobrook

Another bright and warm Sunday saw unbeaten Billericay U12’s welcome both Basildon and Brentwood Development team for a morning of rugby. The edge of a local derby in all games didn’t disappoint.

Game 1 - BRFC u12 v Basildon
The combative tone of forward play was set straight from the kick off as both teams went about their work in tight enthusiastically. Billericay established an early platform and through good hands put Basildon under pressure. The resulting play almost ended in the opening score for Billericay but unfortunately they knocked on close to the line. Billericay were still in control and from a penalty Max Forster crossed the line for a try. Luke Mason added the extras for a 7-0 lead. Billericay continued their domination of the scrum and a strong run from Isabel Beadle relieved pressure from the restart. Basildon won a penalty but Max Morris made the first of many heavy tackles and the ball was turned back over to Billericay. After a period of even play Billericay broke down the left and with good off-loading got to within a metre of the try line before knocking on. Billericay won the scrum against the head and thus closed out a very committed and rewarding win 7-0.

Game 2 – BRFC u12 v Brentwood Dev
Billericay started quickly from their kick off with George Durham running in a solo try from just over half way. Tom Vasey converted for a 7-0 lead. Billericay then switched off for a period of the first half and through not controlling the restart, standing off and missing tackles combined with enterprising Brentwood running – Brentwood scored two very quick tries to lead 7-10. The Bees took it amongst themselves to right the tacking and led my Max Morris put in some big hits. The forwards started to dominate and a driving maul ended up with Max Forster being driven over to score. Another Tom Vasey kick saw Billericay lead 14-10 which soon became 19-10 after a bulldozing run from Max Morris from within his own half. Billericay obtained great territory and possession after the break and through another driving maul Max Forster completed his brace for the game. Luke added the conversion for a 26-10 lead. Brentwood kept trying and a strong low tackle from James saved a likely try. Full time 26-10

Game 3 – BRFC u12 v Basildon
With the post-match pasta being kept warm, Billericay started keenly against an increasing aggressive Basildon outfit. From the kick off Johnny Wyndham and Tom Hollaman combined well to make ground and win a penalty that Max Morris took at pace to crash over the line. Luke Mason converted for a 7-0 lead. Basildon kept the pressure on Billericay and only brave defence by the Bees led again by Max Morris kept Basildon in their own half. Eventually the possession told and Basildon scored a deserved first try which was converted to even the game up at half time 7-7.

In the 2nd half Billericay gained good position but couldn’t retain the ball and Basildon’s pacey centre scored an excellent try from near his own line – 7-14. With the game being shorter than previously played the Bees didn’t panic and kept playing their brand of rugby. The forward and backs linked well through multiple phases of play to get close twice. Eventually with Billericay camped on the Basildon line Oscar Harmer picked the ball from the base of the ruck and scored a try which after Luke Mason scored the conversion levelled the game 14-14. Billericay controlled the restart and got the ball to Max Morris who broke three tackles to find himself in space. After the break away try was converted Billericay lead the game 21-14 and the game was won.
