Billericay Bees U11 played very well away to Westcliff RFC today and had two excellent victories:
Game 1 Westcliff U11 2 : 8 Billericay U11
Game 2 Westcliff U11 1 : 4 Billericay U11
We had eighteen players today, which was an excellent turnout and it was decided to play ten aside on a wide first class pitch - best pitch we've played on all season. Matt decided to fully rotate the squad of with eight of the ten that started the first half of each game being replaced by the eight players who sat out the first half.

Unlike previous weeks the team did not start slowly, scoring two tries very early in the first game. The team showed determination in attack, with some excellent forward running, aggressive tackling and some great passing of the ball - still some improvement required in utilising the full width of the pitch. One excellent feature of today's games was the excellent pressurising of the ball on kick-offs.

Westcliff were excellent hosts, strong opposition and provided a choice of food in the clubhouse after the game.

Game 1 Westcliff U11 2 : 8 Billericay U11

Very early on in the game Tom picked up on halfway and ran through three attempted tackles (they hardly touched him) to score our first try. An excellent example of our agressive running was Jake and Matthew having a great run down the wing, breaking a number of tackles to be held up just short of the line.

A series of strong drives by Lewis, Will D and Leo resulted in a Westcliff scrum five / six meters from their try line. Quick pressure (I think by Christian) on their scrum half produced a spilled ball which Matthew quickly gathered to score from 2 meters out.

Our third try came from a determined run from Jake down the left flank with a good defensive tackle making Jake spill the ball backwards only to be quickly gathered by Tom following up to run in uncontested.

Immediately from the kick-off Westcliff ran the ball back into contact to be met by Leo and Will L. The spilled ball was gathered by Rowan who ran down the right wing to score from 15 meters out.

Cameron (I think) scored our 5th try - Sorry missed it.

What was really pleasing was after eight changes in personnel the second half continued in the same vane with Billericay dominating many phases of the game.

Our sixth try came from Jack M and Ben A applying pressure at the kick-off with Jasper going in as scrum half picking the ball and passing to Cameron who ran in to score. Jack W, Finn, Jamie, Reggie and Charlie were excellent in mid-field with some strong tackling, mauling and rucking. At one stage Jamie tackled Westcliff's biggest player and because he tackled the legs, brought him down and stopped Westcliff making ground.

Jake and Tom ran in our seventh and eight tries in what was a comprehensive victory in the first game.

Game 2 Westcliff U11 1 : 4 Billericay U11

The first half of the second game saw a resurgent Westcliff really take the game to Billericay and they took the lead through a well worked series of passes and a strong finishing run.

A period of great Billericay forward pressure with Will D, Christian and Cameron taking the ball into contact with Tom gathering and passing to Matthew to score what was an excellent team try.

Our second try of the first half came from a big powerful drive by Lewis in midfield, with three Westcliff players hanging off of him, eventually going to ground. Powerful rucking by two or three of the lads and Christian passing the ball to Rowan who ran twenty meters down the right wing to score another excellent team try, giving us a 2 : 1 lead at half time.

Again, after eight changes at half time the team continued in the same vane in what was a more evenly contested match when compared to the first one. After a series of attacking runs in midfield by Jack M, Jamie, and Finn, Reggie gathered and took the ball into contact and offloaded to Will L who passed to Jake for Jake to score with a first class dive in the corner one foot in from touch.

Our final try was another powerful run by Tom from inside our half to score.

For the last three / 4 minutes of the game Westcliff launched a long series of attacks across the full width of the pitch from between two to ten meters out that produced our best piece of defensive play of the day. Ben A, the two Jacks, Jamie, Reggie, the two Wills and Finn all put in a series of excellent tackles to keep Westcliff out. It was great to see such energy at the end of two good games.

The lads did very well today.

Cheers

Laurence
