Dear member of Billericay RFC,
Billericay RFC has been a club for all since 1959, with records suggesting that an earlier form of the club existed as far back as 1904. Throughout our history, we have prided ourselves on providing a safe, welcoming environment where individuals can enjoy a sport that has given many of us lifelong memories and friendships.
To ensure we can continue offering this environment for future generations—and to protect our members in an increasingly litigious climate—we must strengthen the club’s legal structure. At present, Billericay RFC operates as an unincorporated club. While we are covered by the RFU in many areas, there remains a possibility that certain legal claims could fall outside that protection. In such rare circumstances, individual members—particularly those with greater personal assets—could be held liable.
To safeguard all members, the committee and I are proposing that Billericay RFC transitions to a limited company structure, creating Billericay Rugby Football Club Limited and dissolving the club in its current form.
What this means for the club
In practice, very little will change in the day-to-day running of Billericay RFC. The club will continue to operate as Billericay Rugby Football Club in name, spirit, and community. The key difference is that, as a limited company, liability will be capped. This means that only the assets of the club would be at risk in the unlikely event of a lawsuit, and individual members would no longer bear personal financial liability.
What we need from you.
To begin this process, we have created a short questionnaire for all members. It should take no more than five minutes to complete, and your feedback is essential as we consider the best way forward for the club.
